Pickleball--Week of 08/09/2020

NEWS from Georgia Mountain Pickleball.

COVID-19 Update: This virus is still going strong and even accelerating in Towns and Union Counties. Towns added 31 cases last week for a total of 142, Union added 55 for a total of 260. Union also had one more death, a 56 year old white male with an underlying chronic condition. Towns still has one death, Union now has 7. I don’t know if this escalation is a result of more testing or more cases seen when testing, or both, but I would have to assume it’s some of both judging by the increased hospitalizations in Union County.

On July 31st, the Governor of GA issued a new executive order extending the State of Emergency through Sept. 10th. Among the many items covered in the Order include: social distancing is still required and face masks for all residents and visitors are strongly encouraged while outside their place of residence, except when eating, drinking, or exercising outdoors, so nothing has changed for us, which means things are not yet getting better.

Announcing the Doc Holliday Shootout in Griffin, GA at the Wyomia Tyus Olympic Park will be held on Oct. 16th - 18th, 2020. This event was rescheduled once, but, the organizers assured us this tournament will definitely take place. Early registration closes Sept. 18th and final registration closes on Oct. 2nd. This is one of the few tournaments that will be played this year, so get registered soon. Some of the brackets are already full.

Registration for The 2020 Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) State Pickleball Championships ends August 10th (tomorrow). Go to our web site to see the flyer and download the registration form: https://www.georgiamountainpickleball.com/upcoming-tournaments.

You will be representing your county in the state championships competing against other players representing their own counties. As I told you in a previous newsletter, this year they’re not having the regional playoffs due to the pandemic, all registrants go straight to the finals which will be played in Griffin, GA at their 18-court Wyomia Tyus Olympic Park Sept. 11 - 13, 2020.

In order to be eligible to play for your county, you and your partner must be at least part-time residents of the county you’re playing for, be at least 14 years of age and have a minimum skill rating of 3.0. Singles, doubles and mixed doubles will be offered in all age groups and skill levels. Completed registration forms need to go to your county rec. center where you pay the fee and show proof of residence.

Some of us are on the Towns County Chamber email list and they send out a publication twice weekly. One of the items they mentioned in last Thursday’s message concerned the families in our county who have been financially impacted by way of unemployment or shorter hours due to the pandemic. The Towns County Family Connection is soliciting donations for the children in these families so they are assured to have all the school supplies they need for the upcoming school year. I never knew this Towns County Family Connection even existed, but, come to find out, Family Connection is present in every county in GA and they do some amazing things for families in our county. Their mission is to improve the lives of children and families in Towns County and their goals are Healthy Children, School Readiness, School Success, Self-Sufficient Families, and Strong Communities. Working with their Organizational Partners (Towns Co. School, the Chamber, Dept. of Family and Children Services, Dept. of Juvenile Justice, and many others) they have initiated our mentor program, County prevention program (PALS, Project Alert), Youth Development Program, Young Harris Family Development Center, and several other very successful programs. Check out their web site for much more information on this organization: http://towns.gafcp.org/

The Board of Directors of our club were planning a fun type of round robin tournament to raise funds for this cause, but, due to the accelerated rate of the spread of COVID-19 in our area, it was decided for the safety of all concerned to not stage a tournament at this time.

Please consider a donation for this great cause for the families in need in our county.

Mail your check to Towns County Family Connection, 1400 U.S. Highway 76 East, Hiawassee, GA 30546.

Don’t forget the Drill Clinic tomorrow morning at 9:00 at the Hiawassee complex. A great way to learn what and how to drill, headed up by Beth and Dean McCoy. These will be offered again if you missed getting registered this time.

We received a message from Gerry Smith who is currently in Vail, CO as they continue on their great ‘around the country’ adventure, and he says it costs each pickleball player $8.00 per hour to play there !!! Aren’t you glad you’re playing in GA ??

That’s a wrap for this week. Just a reminder, the hand sanitizer and the sanitary wipes I bring to the courts every day are for the use of all of us, so please use them liberally and often.

Thanks to Beth and Dean McCoy for putting this together.  You will probably recognize some of the local Pickleball players in the video.  If anyone has any Pickleball related videos, pictures, or stories while we have been quarantined please send them to gamtnpb@gmail.com.
